ABOUT BEING THE BEST
"Success is to be measured not so much by the position one has reached in life but by the obstacles which he has overcome."
Booker T. Washington
In 1985 when I arrived in the Twin Cities with my young family I knew five people her; three had real estate licenses. Interest rates were at 17%. Young, naive and full of ambition I thought real estate was like a retail store where customers just walked in. Within months I discovered the truth. I was in the top 5% of that conventional company and yet could not support my family. Our savings accounts were dwindling and I was going into debt!
I kept thinking "there has to be a better way!"(Interestingly,I later heard Dave Liniger say that in a speech.)My friend and mentor in the company,Tom Turner, told me about RE/MAX, and the 100% concept. I had never heard of such an idea. There were very few RE/MAX Agents in Twin Cities. We had to spell RE/MAX for most consumers. But I liked the idea so much I made the switch shortly after Tom. My sales soared and my bottom line did even better. I made the 100% Club right away and eventually the Platium Club and the Hall of Fame. I became a true RE/MAX believer and I still am today! Without RE/MAX, I would have left the business long ago.
In 1990 I opened my office in the Western suburbs of Minne- apolis. It was set up to survive. I knew I could support it with just my own sales if necessary. But the first agent joined before I opened. After sixteen years I am proud to say that my very first agents are still with me! By the end of the first year we had ten agents, and by the third, we had twenty-five agents!
In July of 2000 our office moved into a Class A building on lake Minnetonka. The office has grown to where I spend most of my time managing and mentoring. We have an agent owned Title Company and a Mortgage Company In-House thereby providing the consumer with full service. We provide the highest level of technology, education and service to our professionals. For me it has always been more than about the money; it is about being the best!
